BENGALURU: Encouraged by the response Huracan Performante received in India, Italian luxury sports car maker Lamborghini is eyeing exponential growth in the country.

“The response in India has been exciting for us since the super sports car segment in which we operate was going through various challenges where in 2015, we saw a decline in sales and growth. But in 2016, there was double-digit growth in the segment. While we had a lot of challenges, Lamborghini was consistently growing its market share in India and today, we are leaders in the luxury super sports car segment. This segment is still in its infancy but what is important is the trends we can observe,” Sharad Agarwal, head of  Lamborghini in India, told Express.

Despite the high price point where one needs to shell out at least Rs 4 crore for a car, the demand for Lamborghinis in the country has shown an uptick, especially in tier-2 and tier-3 cities, Agarwal said, adding that bulk of the demand is not from third- and fourth-generation entrepreneurs but first-generation businessmen.

Agarwal said there is great demand for luxury super sports vehicles in Madurai, Kochi, Coimbatore in the south and Ludhiana, Lucknow, Indore, Jaipur and Bhubaneswar in the north. Lamborghini’s share in this category of cars is close to 40 per cent.

Asked how Lamborghini will tackle competition with rivals such as Ferrari and Aston Martin, Agarwal said, “We have taken a very different approach in Indian markets and is the only super-luxury car brand in the country, which made an investment in terms of the set-up in the structure in India. We have our own sales and marketing team dedicated to Indian customers.”

Agarwal says Lamborghini made investments in India since the country is one of the strategic markets. “We have events like Lamborghini Esperienza and Accademia, where we bring cars from Italy to a racing track in India. We invite our customers to these programmes to give them the first experience of the brand. These events help us portray the strength of Lamborghini and also help in bringing more people to the family,” he added.
