IndiGo offers free transport of coffin from Delhi to north-east, Jet offers 50 per cent discount

These concessions would be given on referral letter issued from the Delhi Police and the nodal officer for Northeast to ensure the genuineness of the case.

NEW DELHI: In a goodwill gesture for people from north-eastern states, India’s leading carrier IndiGo will carry coffin free of cost from the national capital to five N-E airports at Agartala (Tripura), Chabua (Dibrugarh, Assam), Guwahati, Imphal (Manipur) and Dimapur (Nagaland).

Similarly, Jet Airways has extended 50 per cent concession to carry coffins from Delhi to the Northeast states. It costs anywhere around Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 to transport human remain to any north-eastern destinations.

IndiGo wrote to Delhi police joint commissioner Robin Hibu on his request to airlines to carry the mortal remain of persons from north-eastern states.

Hibu had on December 12, 2016 written to all domestic carriers for concession for carrying coffins from the national capital to the northeast states. According to him more than 12 lakh people from north-east are working in Delhi.

Hibu wrote to airlines that these employees get very low wages and they face great difficulty to transport human remain to their home state in north-east. “Unfortunately, there is no support from these sectors and we find ourselves helpless,” said Mr Hibu in his letter.

In response to his letter, the Jet Airways extended 50 per cent concession to carry coffins from Delhi to the Northeast states. It costs anywhere around Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 to transport human remain to any north-eastern destinations.

However these concessions would be given on referral letter issued from the Delhi Police and the nodal officer for Northeast to ensure the genuineness of the case.
