BENGALURU: Infosys on Tuesday sought to play down reports saying the Bengaluru-based IT major would lay off as many as 1,000 employees. Without making any reference to the reported lay-offs, the company issued a statement saying said performance review of employees is a regular process and that sustained poor performance could lead to “separation”.

“Our performance management process provides for a bi-annual assessment of performance. Therefore, as part of this regular process, performance assessments are done with reference to the goals individuals have on business objectives and other strategic priorities for the company. A continued low feedback on performance could lead to certain performance actions, including separation of an individual and this is done only after feedback. We do this every year and the numbers could vary every performance cycle,” it said.

There has been a buzz about the layoffs over the past week, according to the employees. Express spoke to several employees, who expressed fears that their jobs may be at risk.
“Even though there has been no official intimation to any of the employees about this decision, the talk within the organisation is that the company is considering laying off mid- to senior-level staff. Everyone is anxious as we do not know when this would be executed,” a project manager at Infosys told Express.

Employees who are in between migration to a different project or are in the waiting line to be assigned a new project are the most worried lot as they fear they are in the first row of the firing line.
These are employees who have put in five to six years in the company.  While their appraisals are done in September, there are regular performance assessments. “We fear Infy will categorise this as part of performance assessment,” said an employee.
