CHENNAI: Piramal Enterprises has acquired Digeplex and the associated brands from Shreya Lifesciences for an undisclosed sum to expand its consumer products business. This acquisition will strengthen the Ajay Piramal-led company’s position in the gastro-intestinal segment and is complementary to its existing brands – Polycrol and Naturolax in the GI segment.

Recalling that acquisition is an overriding strategy that helped the firm achieve its goal of being a striking player in the healthcare system in the last two years, executive director Nandini Piramal said, “We have completed three such transactions in the consumer products business alone and we believe Digeplex and its associated brands are a strategic fit for our portfolio that will help us move closer towards our stated objective.”

The combination of organic growth and acquisitions has helped the company create a powerful over the counter portfolio of brands in the country, she added.

According to Kedar Rajadnye, chief operating officer for the consumer products division, the gastro-intestinal market comprising constipation, diarrhoea and appetite stimulant categories, is a Rs 13,000-crore opportunity which has been clipping at 11 per cent every year.
