Nearly 2,500 workers of automobile firms detained by police

Employees from Yamaha claimed that they were treated very badly at work.

CHENNAI: Nearly 2,500 employees working at automobile majors—Yamaha India, Royal Enfield and Myoung Shin India Automotive (MSI)—were detained by police on Tuesday morning when they attempted to march from Sriperumbudur to Kancheepuram collectorate. The march was organised by the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU). They were released in the evening.

Employees from Yamaha claimed that they were treated very badly at work. “The company has not done anything about it, even though we have protested for over a month now. The labour department even instructed the company to reinstate two fired employees, but the company has failed to do so,” said an employee. Employees of Enfield demanded that they be hired-back.

Speaking to Express, a source from the State Labour Department said: “If no reconciliation happens for 45 days, then we will direct the case to labour court after deciding whether the concerns raised by the employees are genuine,” the source said.
