The Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE) has not ruled out doing away with the class X board exam even for students who are shifting to other boards, CBSE chairman Vineet Joshi said on Saturday.
“We are analysing data of the last two years and we find there is no difference between those who take the board exam and those who take the school-based exam. Some day, perhaps, students who are shifting boards will not have to take the board exam as the present scheme demands,” Joshi told reporters on the sidelines of a programme at Indian Institute of Management Bangalore.
Joshi, however, added that parents need to be convinced as there is a notion that board results are better than school-based results. “Based on the last two years’ data, we will take the proposal to the parents as well as to the boards,” he said. Since 2011, the CBSE class X board exam has been made optional. Under this system, students who wish to continue in the same school after class X need not take board exam.
‘Too Early to Rate CCE’
In 2011, the CBSE introduced continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE) in which a student’s marks are replaced by grades which will be evaluated through a series of curriculars and extracurricular evaluations along with academics. He said it is too early to say if the CCE is serving its purpose of development of students.
“The CCE is not just a change in measurement scale. It allows teaching, learning and assessment to happen simultaneously,” he said.
Accreditation
The pilot phase of CBSE’s ambitious CBSE School Quality Assessment and Accreditation will end in January, he said. “The pilot accreditation process is on in 12 schools, and reports of two schools are yet to come. The objective is to see how infrastructure is being used. Accreditation takes care of the invisible processes of education,” Joshi said.
After January, affiliated schools will have to undergo mandatory accreditation.
