The increasing incidents of rape in the city have shocked many people.
According to statistics available with the police, the city has recorded 48 cases of rape in the first six months of this year. It has raised many serious questions about policing, safety of women, etc.
Commenting on the issue, former police commissioner Revanna Siddaiah said, “The lack of gender sensitivity among policemen is one of the main reasons for the rise in crime against women. The problem should be solved by understanding, investigating and solving cases within a stipulated period.”
He said the police often fail to win the confidence of the victims because enforcement and action were very weak.
“Also, there is very little appreciation for good work within the department. Police who are doing a good job in a case should be applauded so that it proves to be a morale booster for them and others too,” Revanna Siddaiah observed.
Former inspector-turned-politician Abdul Azeem said, “If the police act on a case instantly and solve it through swift cracking down and get conviction, it will instil hope in the hearts of people and will naturally prevent criminals from committing crime. Prevention of crime against women lies in the hands of the police. Police have to work on creating fear in the minds of culprits.”
He also said one important thing the police department can work on is improving the standard of investigation.
“If this is improved and charge-sheets are filed within 30 days as opposed to the usual 90 days, then cases will come down. Case trials should be completed within a maximum of one year and police have to be alert at all times,” Azeem added.
