If the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) authorities do not act fast and take measures to stop foul smell emanating from the landfill sites near Mandur, Bangaloreans may soon face a garbage crisis again.
Sources said the BBMP authorities were supposed to spray effective micro-organisms (EM) solution in Mandur landfills, so that the villagers are not affected by the garbage smell. But it has been stopped for the last few days as experts from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) are studying the effectiveness of EM solution, sources said. The study was started on July 27 when the IISc experts visited the landfill. Speaking to Express, Thammanna, Mandur Gram Panchayath member, said everyday garbage trucks are coming to the landfill sites to dump waste from Bangalore. “During the festival season, more waste will be generated and the same will be dumped. Garbage and rain can be a deadly combination. We are unable to reside here due to the smell,” he said.
“If the BBMP authorities do not take any action, we will have to stop vehicles from entering the landfill. But as on Friday, garbage trucks are coming to Mandur,” he said.
BBMP officials, however, said that they will resume spraying of EM solution from August 18. It was temporarily stopped for study, an official said. During the same period last year, Bangalore witnessed a huge garbage problem when villagers of Mandur and Mavallipuram protested and stopped garbage trucks from dumping waste in landfills.
