Sahasra Deepika’s annual spelling bee is back for the fourth time to search for talent amongst students of Kannada medium government schools in the city.

Around 1,200 students from 18 schools are to pit against each other in the spelling competition at Hombegowda Boys Govt High School Auditorium next Saturday, February 9 and the winning schools will lift the Sahasra Deepika Spelling Bee Rolling Trophy. The competition is open to urban and rural Kannada medium government schools.

Sahasra Deepika started the spelling competition Outreach Program to “serve the needy students studying in the Government High Schools in Bangalore metropolitan area” in 2009 with about 1000 students from the ninth standard participating.

Sahasra Deepika wants to encourage Kannada medium students studying in the government high schools to improve their English vocabulary. It does not stray from the syllabus as the 200 words in the list of words proposed for the contest are taken from the glossary section of the ninth and tenth standard English Textbooks.

According to a Saharsra Deepika release, the purpose is to identify talented students and encourage them to move forward with confidence, expose the students to the public and help them understand their potential and create an opportunity for students from different schools to interact.

The competition will have three levels with specified number of words. The preliminary will be based on categories as per the different standards the students study in. The semi-final is an intra-school contest and the final is an inter-school championship contest, which will be held next Saturday. The winning school will receive the trophy and the first four winners from the championship contest will receive certificates, medals and prizes. The intra-school level winners will also receive prizes.
