Keeping the idea of universal brotherhood and international peace in mind, Sethu Bhaskara Matriculation Higher Secondary School honoured the United Nations Organisation on Wednesday and celebrated Jawaharlal Nehru’s birthday. The occasion was graced by Masanori Nakano, the Consul General of the Consulate of Japan, Chennai.

The special guests were Dr Vijayalakshmi (former chief educational officer) and Dr Balasubramaniam, from the Department of Education, University of Madras. The chief guest was welcomed by the school band and the students waved the flags of Japan and India. The programme started with the prayer song. Principal S P P Selvakumar addressed the gathering and welcomed the guests. The chief guest hoisted the UN flag and coordinator of the programme Yamuna Gopal administered the peace pledge.

The students were inspired by Nakano’s thought-provoking speech. The highlight of the programme was the cultural event, which started after the prize distribution    enacting tiny tots and Russell Sam, higher secondary English teacher dressed in female attire, explained the story behind the sorrow of the Solitary Reaper.

The backstage arrangements were taken care of by V Amarendiran, the Vice-Principal and the vote of thanks was proposed by Yamuna Gopal. The event concluded with the National Anthem.
