Commuters using the Bangalore International Airport on December 14 will get the first glimpse of the expanded terminal 1A, as Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) on Sunday announced that work on the terminal was complete.

Along with the inauguration of the terminal, the airport will also officially change its name to Kempegowda International Airport on the same day, a statement from BIAL said.

The expanded terminal will span over 150,500 sq mt which is more than double the exisiting floor space. The capacity of the terminal is expected to be enhanced greatly by this move, with 86 check in counters instead of the current 53. About 23 aerobridges including a Code F aerobridge will be there in the new terminal.

“The new name honours Kempegowda, the founding father of Bangalore, and the renaming is being timed with the opening of the T1A, where the facilities, radiant interiors and exteriors mirrors the rich culture of Karnataka and the vibrant colors of the Garden City. With T1A we want our passengers to  experience everything that was unique about Bangalore where one entered the airport, and at the same time enjoyed the benefits of world-class facilities,” said G V Sanjay Reddy, Managing Director, BIAL.

The terminal will introduce travellers to the local culture with artwork by award winning painters and sculptors.

Restaurants offering a taste of local cuisine will also be opened at the airport, a statement said.
