Six child labourers, aged between 10 and 15 years, were rescued in an operation conducted at Vinobha Nagar near Urvashi Theatre on J C Road on Monday.
The operation, jointly conducted by the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Department of Women and Child Development, Kalasipalyam police and the Special Juvenile Police Unit members around 11.30 am after the Childline volunteers found as many as 20 boys employed in the area which has many carpentry shops, when the volunteers were conducting an awareness campaign.
According to Nagamani of the Childline 1098, the boys were working at four shops painting cupboards. “They were employed there for the past four months and worked for more than 10 hours a day. They were earning between Rs 200 and 400 and were forced to arrange for their own food,” he said.
“They were staying at their houses and coming to work every day to these shops. Some of them may have been employed by their parents as they did not show interest in studies,” she added.
The rescued children have been sent to the Children’s Home for Boys run by the Child Welfare Committee.
