A security guard was killed by two men who made a futile attempt to loot IDBI Bank’s ATM kiosk in Mahadevapura in the wee hours of Monday.

The victim has been identified as Harishankar Sharma, a native of Madhya Pradesh. He had joined work just two weeks ago. The accused are Jintu Devanath (21) and Nabo A Kumar (23) of Assam.

Night beat police who noticed the miscreants, tried to trap them inside the ATM. However, they managed to escape by smashing the glass door. Based on crucial clues, police swung into action and managed to arrest the accused within hours.

An hour before the Mahadevapura incident, miscreants tried to loot an ATM in Whitefield.

Police were alerted after this and Mahadevapura police station’s night beat police Chikkanarasimaiah and Manjunatha Swamy were on the lookout for the miscreants and went to the IDBI Bank ATM on Doddanekundi Ring Road. The miscreants, who noticed the policemen, switched off the ATM light and tried to mislead them. But the police who grew suspicious, approached the ATM and heard a noise. When they tried to block the main door, the miscreants broke open the glass next to the door and escaped.

Police found Sharma dead inside the ATM kiosk. They then alerted a senior police officer who rushed to the spot.  Police said the accused killed him when he tried to rise an alarm. They stabbed him repeatedly with a screw driver before attacking him with wooden logs.

Upon interrogation, police found that Jintu and Kumar had applied for a security guard’s job in the city and were working in Ferns City apartment. The accused would take care of dogs belonging to one of the residents of the apartment.

After killing Sharma, the duo went back to the apartment.

The owner of the apartment, Munendrakumar, who noticed injuries on their legs and hands, enquired about them. They told him they had met with an accident while riding the bike.

The owner shifted them to a private hospital, but informed police after he found their version suspicious.

Police, already looking for the suspects in hospitals in the area, went to the hospital around 9.15 am and arrested them. They confessed to the crime and said they hatched the plan as they were not earning enough. They wanted to return to Assam with the loot, the officer added.

Last September, a 53-year-old security guard M Chandrappa of Uttarahalli, was murdered by a miscreant during an attempted robbery of a Corporation Bank ATM. However, police cracked the case within two hours.
