Creating a network of music, fine arts and performing arts, reviving all forms of genres in music and establishing distance and online courses are the objectives of the Tamil Nadu Music and Fine Arts University to be set up in the State.

Giving effect to the announcement made by CM J Jayalalithaa during the Budget session, Minister for Higher Education P Palaniappan introduced a Bill in the State Assembly on Tuesday for this. The headquarters of the university will be located within the limits of Chennai city or within a radius of 100 kilometres.

The new university will bring in a common syllabus for music and fine arts, besides conducting research and examinations. There will be separate departments for vocal, veena, violin, bharatanatyam and folk arts among others.
