Four-time councillor from Basavanagudi ward, B S Sathyanarayana of BJP, is the new Mayor while his deputy is first-time Councillor Indira, representing Byatarayanapura ward. Both were unanimously elected on Wednesday.

Outgoing Mayor D Venkatesh Murthy and Deputy Mayor L Srinivas handed over charge to their successors after a tenure of over  17 months.

With just a few months left for the next Lok Sabha elections, BJP seems to be banking on its rule in BBMP. Sathyanarayana, a Brahmin, is said to have been backed by Bangalore South MP Ananthkumar.

The last Mayor from this community was Seshadri of Janata Dal, in 1987. Popularly known as Katte Sathya, he is the 47th Mayor of Bangalore. In 2010, when the reservation for the Mayor candidate was for General category, Sathyanarayana had missed the bus and three-time Councillor S K Nataraj became Mayor. The State government changed the reservation roster from General-Women to General this year, which helped Sathyanarayana.

Sathyanarayana, who was elected four times from Basavanagudi ward (1990, 1996, 2001 and 2010), holds a Diploma in Electrical engineering. He worked with Kirloskar for 25 years since 1979 and was later elected as councillor in 1990. He continued to work in Kirloskar despite being elected councillor. His wife Usha Sathyanarayana, a housewife, said they got the confirmation about his elevation on Tuesday evening. His daughter Shruthi is married and son Sujay is studying MA in Economics.

Indira to present administrative report

If everything goes well, the administrative report will be presented at least for the year 2013-14. Newly elected Deputy Mayor Indira said she is keen on presenting the report.

Since 2010, no Deputy Mayor from the BJP had presented the administrative report.

Indira told reporters on Wednesday that as per Section 61(3) of the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act, the Deputy Mayor has to present the administrative report. “I shall discuss with the Mayor and finalise the date to present the report,” she said. Indira was a member of Social Welfare and Education Committees in the BBMP.  She is married to Mohan Kumar, who is a Circle Police Inspector and daughter Harshika is a seventh standard student.
