BBMP Officials Keep Busy on Sunday, Cover Drains

BANGALORE: With Meteorological Department forecasting more rain over the next few days, Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials were seen working even on Sunday to cover open drains and clear silt in storm water drains.

BBMP Commissioner M Lakshminarayana said “The Palike has to work round the clock to contain further damage and put the system back on track.”

On Sunday, BBMP officials took up work on covering drains and replacing slabs in places where they were missing, removing of silt in shoulder drains and erecting chain link fencing along storm water drain at BTM Layout, Jayadeva flyover, Jayanagar and suurounding areas.

“The commissioner has directed officials to monitor such works and ensure that no tragedies take place due to heavy rain. Chief engineers of all zones have been asked to look into problems in the interior parts while the Palike major works department will look after major roads” said K T Nagaraj, BBMP Superintending Engineer, Major and Arterial Roads.

Palike Chief Engineer (South Zone) Ramesh  said, “We have taken up work in South Zone and a few of side drains were covered and silt removed from junctions and shoulder drains. Missing slabs are being replaced and the assistant engineer at the ward level will identify more such issues and work will be taken up on priority,” he said.

The Palike has also prioritised work in low-lying areas like Anepalaya, Laxman Rao Nagar, Neelasandra and Mysore Road flyover.

“The executive engineers, assistant executive engineers and assistant engineers of respective wards have been directed to make inspection rounds and report to the control room,” said an official.
