14 Suffer Eye Injuries

BANGALORE : Eye injuries and the Diwali festival go hand in hand. As many as 14 cases of eye injuries have been reported in the city from Tuesday. Seven cases have been reported in Minto Eye Hospital, five cases in Narayana Nethralaya and one each in Nethradhama and K C General hospital.

Speaking to Express, Sujatha Rathod, Professor of Ophthalmology, Minto Eye Hospital said, “Five out of the seven cases are major ones. Chandru (12) from Kamakshipalya was hit by a cracker. Sahid Pasha (8) of Valmikinagar on Mysore Road injured his eye when the cracker he was handling exploded.”

However, city ophthalmologists have said that the number of cases this year has come down significantly. They attribute this to increased awareness and persistent rainfall.

Narayana Nethralaya Director Dr Bhujanga Shetty said incidents related to crackers have come down. “We have not had any major cases so far. Parental observation while bursting crackers has also helped,” he said.
