Focus on Your Own Spiritual Journey

Focus on Your Own Spiritual Journey

The passing panorama of life is filled with many people and problems. If we let our mind get caught up in becoming a running commentator on every other person’s words and deeds, we are nothing more than a tape recorder replaying every event. Our every breath is precious. If we waste this life, who knows what will become of us in the next? We should worry about our own salvation. We should be concerned with our own spiritual progress. Let others do as they will. Let others say what they wish. We should remain centered and focused on our own spiritual journey to God. We have not been hired by God as critics of everyone else. Let God be the judge of each person. We should be the judge of ourselves.

If we scrutinised ourselves and criticized ourselves with the same intensity that we do so to others, we would find how many failings we have. If we worked on correcting our faults, we would make more progress on our journey Home.

Let us replace all negative thoughts, words, and deeds with nonviolent thoughts. We should look at others’ mistakes and failings with compassion. When  children make mistakes we do not criticise them. We look upon them compassionately and realize that they must make many mistakes in order to learn. Similarly, others are at various stages of their spiritual journey. If they make mistakes we should look upon them lovingly and with compassion.

If we can cultivate nonviolence in our daily lives we will find that God is pleased with us and sheds more and more of His grace. We will become an abode of peace and tranquillity for those around us. We will be helping God by becoming a conscious co-worker in His divine plan. We will be helping him relieve the sufferings of His children. Our progress will be accelerated and all other virtues will be added unto us.

If each of us could attain this cherished goal, this planet would enter a Golden Age in which there would be no wars or conflicts. There would be no more bloodshed. We would have a world in which there were peaceful solutions to problems and conflicts. Sant Darshan Singh prayed for such a world and I hope that in my lifetime and yours we see it become a reality. Let this verse of Sant Darshan Singh find its fulfillment: From dawn to dawn, let us speak of peace and listen to the message of love. The shower-laden clouds of sawan have enveloped the tavern of time, O Cupbearer, let the cup of love go round and round and ‘round.
