'Health Officers Responsible for Care of Endosulfan Victims'

BENGALURU: The High Court on Monday said taluk health officers were responsible for providing benefits to endosulfan victims in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts.

Disposing of a petition filed by the High Court Legal Services Committee based on media reports of the sufferings of endosulfan victims, the division bench comprising Chief Justice D H Waghela and Justice Ashok B Hinchigeri directed taluk health officers and district legal service authorities of the three districts to assist the victims in getting their grievances redressed.

The bench said the member secretary of the legal services authority had assured the court that not only district legal service authorities, but even taluk legal service authorities had been instructed to assist victims.

Clarified

The bench clarified that the aid for victims would depend on the results of the case pending in the Supreme Court.

These directions came after discrepancies in the system were brought to the notice of the court by amicus curiae Vaishali Hegde.
