Child Beggars Rehabilitated in Chikballapur

BENGALURU: Two children, who were forced into begging by their parents in Chikballapur, have been admitted to a rehabilitation centre.

Chikballapur Deputy Commissioner M V Venkatesh said the parents used to use the alms collected by the children to buy alcohol.

The issue came to light when a team of officials, led by the tahsildar, visited Gudibande village on February 13.

After a report appeared in a newspaper, Upa Lokayukta Subash B Adi issued a notice to the deputy commissioner.

Venkatesh said the children belong to the nomadic Hakkipikki community and the parents had pushed them into begging despite being advised against this by Child Welfare Committee members.

He said officials have been directed to provide uniforms, textbooks and food to the children. The district administration will also provide BPL card and jobs to the parents under the MGNREGA scheme.
