Kirmani Urges Students To Reach for the Sky

QUEEN'S ROAD: Don’t imitate your role models, rather aim to be better than them, said former Team India wicket-keeper Syed Kirmani after  inaugurating the 133rd Annual Athletic Meet of St Joseph’s College in the city recently.

Kirmani, a member of the 1983 squad that won the Cricket World Cup, told students, “You alone are your inspiration. Don’t just follow your role models, aim to better them.”

Kirmani declared open the annual sports meet after a march-past by over 3,000 students. He said as important as the determination to succeed is discipline, both physical and mental. “It is easy to reach the top. It requires character and discipline to stay there.”

After watching a student marching barefoot, a nostalgic Kirmani said, “It reminds me of my school days. My father could not afford to buy a pair of shoes. So I had to run barefoot at my practice sessions.”

Prabha Industries CEO Shivakumar and entrepreneur A R Hebbar were the guests of honour. College rector Rev Fr Brian Pereira S J presided over the event.
