Practical Classes For Maths Too

BENGALURU: From the next academic year, students of Pre-university courses with science combinations will have to attend practical classes even for Mathematics.

As of now, the practical classes are conducted for all the science subjects except Mathematics. From the academic year 2016-17 the same will be extended even for Mathematics. Considering the proposal submitted by the Karnataka State Pre University College Mathematics Teachers Forum, the department had finalised a frame work.

After several meeting with experts, faculties, forum representatives and department officials, it has been decided to go for 80:20 model which is in practice in most states for Mathematics subject. However, the same needs to be submitted to the government.

“As we have adopted NCERT curriculum we have to introduce practical classes even for Mathematics. We will soon submit the same to government,” said BS Ramesh, director state department of PU Education.

In the beginning it had discussed to continue the 70:30 pattern which is in practice for all the science subjects like Physics, Biology, Chemistry. But, later it has been decided to go with 80:20 pattern which is in practice at many states. “We have studied the pattern which is in practice at states like Maharashtra, West Bengal, Goa, Rajasthan, Madhyapradesh and Kerala,” said a senior official who is co-ordinating the issue.

According to Forum members, this will help to improve the interest of students in Mathematics subject and also to reduce the fear on the subject. As it is mentioned in the frame work, in the total 140 hours provided for Mathematics teaching 117 will be for theory and the rest for practical and 30 students can be accommodated at practical class at a time and the duration will be 2 hours.

It is divided as: 70 for theory, 20 practical examination, 06 record marks and 04 for viva examination.

This move from the department is well accepted by the students community. Speaking to Express, Meena a student said, “IF we get practical marks for Mathematics also, our over all score will be increased and we are happy.”

“We have no idea about how do they conduct practical classes for Mathematics, but, we happy that it will help us in scoring more,” said another student.
