Karnataka spent Rs 3 crore more for re-exams

The state government has spent around Rs 10 crore just to print the question papers of the Pre-university II final exams during March/April 2016.

BENGALURU: The state government has spent around Rs 10 crore just to print the question papers of the Pre-university II final exams during March/April 2016, which is Rs 3 crore more compared with normal expenditure by the state Department of Pre-University Education on printing question papers.

This data has been placed by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the winter session at Belagavi on Thursday. As per the details submitted by the Chief Minister, an additional Rs 33 lakh, Rs 340 lakh and Rs 330 lakh was released to the PU department for re-examination expenses.

The total expenditure for printing of question papers will be around Rs 7 crore and as the department had to print them three times in instalments due to massive question paper leak, the expenses shot up to Rs 10 crore, as per the information available with the department.

A senior official from Accounts section of the PUE department confirmed it and told Express, “What Chief Minister mentioned in the Belagavi session is expenditure towards printing of question papers. During 2016 exams, we had to print question papers thrice for a particular subject as there was a paper leak.”

According to the data available with the department, the total expenditure for one final exam (if there is no paper leak/re-exam) costs Rs 40 crore. Of that, Rs 7 crore is for printing question papers, Rs 30 crore for remunerating teachers who attend exam and evaluation duty and Rs 3 crore is for the transportation and paper setters remuneration.
