Traffic police write to BWSSB chief over pothole death

BENGALURU: Byatarayanapura Traffic Police, who are investigating the death of 24-year-old Varun Gowda, who came under the wheels of a bus while trying to avoid a pothole on Mysuru Road on Thursday, have written a letter to the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) chief to confirm if they had taken permission to dig the road for repairing leakage in a water pipeline.

A senior police officer said on Friday that preliminary investigations revealed that it is a clear of case of negligence by BWSSB staff who had dug up the road. In fact, according to the locals, a BWSSB vehicle was at the spot when the repair work was being done. Police also sought details of the BWSSB assistant engineer who has been charged with negligence for Gowda’s death.

Gowda, an employee of a private factory in Kengeri, was on his way to work when the bus crushed him to death. “Based on CCTV footage, efforts are on to nab the private bus driver who fled the scene along with the vehicle. The bus was driven in a reckless manner,” the officer said.
BWSSB officials had on Thursday said that the pothole was not dug by them, but by BMRCL.
