Man held for posing as contract killer to extort money from Bengaluru businessman

He used to make calls from various locations

BENGALURU: In a bid to clear his loans, a 28-year-old unemployed man, claiming to be a supari killer, threatened a businessman and tried to extort money from him. However, he is now cooling his heels behind bars.
Subramanyapura police arrested Kempegowda, a resident of Ramachandrapura, who repeatedly threatened a businessman to extort money. Kempegowda called Anil Goyal, a granite trader residing in Uttarahalli, and demanded `20 lakh saying that his rivals had given `10 lakh to kill him. Goyal lives with his family in an apartment in Uttarahalli and Kempegowda was working as the house keeping staffer in the same building. He had quit the job recently. He knew Goyal was a well-established businessman, police said.

Kempegowda called Goyal over phone and told him that he has information about his family members. Terrified, Goyal discussed this with his friends and filed a complaint with the police. Kempegowda was smart enough to use many SIM cards and he used to call from different locations. The police then hatched a plan to nab the caller. They asked Goyal to agree to pay. Kempegowda asked him to come to NICE Road. A police team was waiting for the accused at the spot and they managed to nab Kempegowda who had come on a two-wheeler to collect the money.
Police said that Kempegowda had also extorted money in similar fashion from a businessman in C K Acchukattu police limits.
Recently, one K R Guru and one Prakash, both claiming to be supari killers, had extorted `90 lakh from a businessman. They were nabbed by the C K Acchukattu police on October 1.
