State released Cauvery water earlier too, says Karnataka CM

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah pointed out that state had released water to Tamil Nadu under SC directions in 1995, 2002 and 2012-13.

BENGALURU: In a veiled attack at BJP leaders, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah pointed out that state had released water to Tamil Nadu under SC directions in 1995, 2002 and 2012-13.

“In 2012, the Jagadish Shettar government released 10,000 cusecs for 9 days. Shettar had not bothered to consult the opposition parties before taking the decision,” Siddaramaiah said.

The government would file the plea in a day or two, asking the apex court to modify its order considering the “extreme difficulty in implementing the order as it would severely hit the farmers in Karnataka and drinking water supply for Bengaluru, Mysuru and other cities”. Siddaramaiah added that the government has also decided to approach the Cauvery Supervisory Committee to present the “distress the state is experiencing due to failure of monsoon, poor storage in its reservoirs in Cauvery basin and the drinking water needs of the state”.

Siddaramaiah assured farmers he was committed to providing water supply for their crops. He appealed to people not to resort to violence during their protests.
