BENGALURU: Central Crime Branch police have arrested a 28-year-old man for allegedly issuing fake marks cards and other certificates to students for a fee as high as `2 lakh.

Kunal Kumar Mondal, a native of Bihar, has been living in Bengaluru since 2011. He lived in an apartment near Manyata Tech Park.

Police said that Mondal, a post graduate, started working for a private college in 2011. His work was related to the admission process.

He then opened an office named ‘Join Us’ in Manipal Centre on Dickenson Road, where he claimed to do career counselling. Whenever it was time for college admissions, he would distribute pamphlets near reputed colleges, police said.

“When students and parents approached him, he would tell them the student would not get a seat in any of the reputed colleges with such low marks. He would then suggest that the student get a new marks card at a cost of `2 lakh,” a police source said.

Police added that many students have got seats in reputed colleges through Kunal. He has been issuing fake certificates for the past four years.

Nobody had registered a complaint against him. “An informant told us about Kunal and we arrested him from his office. We are yet to figure out how many students have been conned,” said the official
