BENGALURU: Who is gobbling up Varthur Lake? On Saturday night, 100 truckloads of mud was dumped on Varthur lake bed. While Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP)  washed its hand of the whole thing stating it is the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) which is the custodian of the lake, BDA, on the other hand, said issues on encroachment come under the Deputy Commissioner, Bengaluru Urban.

However, Karnataka Lake Conservartion and Development Authority Chairman Vidyasagar said, “I have received a complaint on Saturday. I will visit the spot and then make my analysis and take necessary action. I have intimated BDA Commissioner as well about the complaint.” Ranjan Sarma, a resident, said, “We had called up the corporator regarding the dumping of mud. She told us that she is aware of it but even she has no idea who is behind it.”

Another resident said, “The Lake Authority chief was informed about the dumping and encroachment a week ago when he was in Delhi. On Saturday night when we witnessed truck movement, we sent a complaint to the BBMP, BDA and other civic agencies. In the last five days, the activity of trucks and earthmovers has picked up pace.” Just like Bellandur Lake, Varthur Lake too has been frothing and there have been complaints of encroachment.
