Gas leak sparks fire in GAIL pipeline in Bengaluru

Major accident averted as Bandepalya residents inform officials; second incident in past 10 days.

BENGALURU: People residing near the Shiva temple at Bandepalya near Electronic City had a scare on Saturday afternoon after a pipeline laid by GAIL Gas Ltd caught fire due to a leakage.

Minutes after being informed by the local residents at 1.50 pm, officials from the Electronic City Fire Service Station rushed to the spot near Garebhavi Palya signal and doused the fire, averting a major accident. Authorities of Gas Authority of India Ltd said the gas supply was immediately stopped in the line to bring the fire under control.

A department official said that this is the second such incident in the past 10 days in their limits. A similar incident took place at Mangammanapalya a few days ago.

The officer said that GAIL authorities were currently testing the gas supply pipelines to check for leakages.

On Saturday too, they were testing a pipeline when a leak resulted in a fire. A fire department official said that the leakage in the pipeline could have been due to road works in the vicinity.

The officer said that though it is a minor incident, they have warned the GAIL authorities to prevent such accidents. “We will book a case if similar incidents occur in future,” the officer said.

Gas supply not disrupted

A GAIL official told Express that the ‘minor incident’ has not disrupted the gas supply in the city.

GAIL Gas Ltd supplies gas to households in areas including HSR Layout, Bellandur and Dollar’s Colony.
“All the procedures are being followed strictly. We have intensified patrolling and are also putting up signages. We have also asked the authorities taking up road-digging works to bring it to our notice so that we can guide them,” the official said.
