BENGALURU: A day after alleged negligence of BBMP staff snuffed life out of the 13-year-old girl Priya at MVJ Park, Mahadevapura police booked three, including an engineer and a security guard holding them responsible for the death due to lack of safety measures. On Saturday, Priya, a resident of MVJ Layout along with her two friends had come to the park to play and died after an iron tool fell on her head.
Seemanth Kumar Singh, Additional commissioner of police (East) along with Mahadevapura police on Sunday inspected the spot and a case of negligence was booked against a ward engineer, maintenance in-charge of the park and the security guard.
“The premise was not secured and equipment were kept open that led to the mishap. Hence, we have taken legal action against the BBMP officials and further investigation is on,” Singh said.
The investigation officer said that there was no security guard at the park when the incident occurred and the agency also failed to take safety measures after the play equipment arrived at the premises. “BBMP officials are directly responsible for the death of Priya,” the officer added.
Nayana, who was playing with Priya told Express that three of them came to the park around 5.15pm. She climbed a slide which was not fixed and came down. Then along with Subhiksha she went to use another equipment. Priya now climbed the slide and the moment she came down, an overweight tool kept nearby fell on her head. Nayana rushed to the rescue and cried for help, following which an elder woman who was walking in the park reached there immediately along with two boys. Priya was taken to a private hospital in Baiyapanahalli where she was declared brought dead.
“Priya on Saturday did not go to the school thinking there will not be many classes in the wake of I - Day preparations. She called me to play and we subsequently went to the park together with Subhiksha. There was no security guard,” Nayana said.
A local resident Munirathnam said that there were three similar equipment in the park. While two of them were erected, one was sloped on the ground. They were supposed to be installed. Unware of it, children climbed it and BBMP staff’s negligence should be blamed for the mishap.
S G Nagaraj, BBMP corporator of Vignananagar Ward said that the parked was closed for few days due to maintenance. But residents forced the security guard to open it as they wanted to sit at evening time. Ramesh, a security guard has been deployed at the park but he had gone to another park to bring something at the time of the incident.
