BENGALURU: It’s an unusual role reversal. Students across government degree colleges in the state will now decide what their teachers will wear. With teaching and non-teaching staff at these colleges set to get a dress code, the government has mandated that students should get a say in the issue.

In a circular to principals of all government degree colleges, the joint commissioner of collegiate education has written that the “idea is to bring in more discipline in higher education system”. “The opinions of students about implementing dress code to teaching and non-teaching faculties should be sent to the office of the commissioner of collegiate education,” reads the circular.

Apart from the dress code, name plates with designation too will have to be worn by the staff.
According to department officials, the circular was issued following communication on dress code in September 2016.
However, move to seek students’ opinion has not been received well by the teachers’ fraternity. One of them said, “We come to college wearing decent dresses and cannot dress as per students’ wish.”
