BENGALURU: Mantri Square Mall will finally be open to the public on Sunday, 40 days after a wall collapse in the mall left at least four people injured. Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner has re-issued the occupancy certificate to the mall. Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad confirmed this.

The wall collapse incident was followed by the commissioner temporarily withdrawing the occupancy certificate for the mall on January 16.

Two days later, the commissioner constituted a six-member expert committee under his chairmanship to study the building’s stability. The committee report on February 2 pointed out defects in the structure. Later, private consultancy, Infotech Engineering Consultant, was asked to check the stability. It submitted the report on February 22 stating that “Structure of Mantri Mall is structurally stable and is suitable for beneficial use for which it is designed”.

In his order, the commissioner stated that the occupancy certificate will be re-issued with certain conditions.

The third floor should be closed until the repair works are completed for the collapsed portion. The damaged portion of the roof slab on the third floor should be cleared under supervision of experts. Annual maintenance of the building should be done and the same should be communicated to the BBMP.

Fire clearance certificate should be obtained every two years. Utilities like sewerage lines, water supply lines and AC ducts should also be checked. The parking space should be used only for parking.
