HC rejects Mehdi’s bail plea

He is accused of posting ‘offensive’ messages and had tweeted 1,22,203 times.

BENGALURU: The High Court on Thursday rejected the bail plea of suspected ISIS propagandist Mehdi Masroor Biswas.

“It is to be noted that Mehdi’s efforts were for the specific purpose of destabilising the nation and society. Destabilising the web of the society and the state cannot be done just by verbal method but can also be done by using soft and illegal methods like the one used by the petitioner which affects social harmony,” Justice L Narayana Swamy observed while rejecting Mehdi’s bail plea.

The judge also noted that the paramount importance is always the security and safety of the nation and society. The materials in the hands of the prosecution against which the chargesheet is filed are sufficient for rejecting the petitioner’s case. Accordingly, the petition is rejected, the judge said.

According to the prosecution, Mehdi, through his Twitter account ‘@shamiwitness’, knowingly and intentionally penetrated or accessed the computer resources, tweeted 1,22,203 times and posted 15,446 images, which would create terror in the hearts and minds of people who opposed the ideology of radicalism or a caliphate.
