BENGALURU: The creation of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) from BMP has posed a huge challenge when it comes to carrying out development works in the newly-added areas, said Bengaluru Development and Town Planning Minister K J George.

Speaking at a function organised in connection with the laying of the foundation stone for various road widening and asphalting works worth `50 crore at Nagarbhavi 2nd Stage here on Sunday, George spoke of the shortage of availability of financial resources for the required infrastructure.

“The newly-added areas need to be developed and we need money for it. We need to provide at least basic amenities to these areas. The road widening and asphalting will cover 27.468 km and will be carried out in Nagarbhavi 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th and 13th Blocks. It also includes development of park running into 15,048 square meters.

“A sum of `7,500 crore has been allocated for the BBMP alone in this financial year,” he said. A sum of `3,500 crore had to be paid towards pending bills by the BBMP along with interest that had accrued on it, George added.

In addition, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board has to install Sewage Treatment Plants. “By March, we hope to treat 50 per cent of the sewage water presently discharged through these STPs,” he added.
