BENGALURU: The Department of Pre University Education is seriously considering helping students at government pre university colleges crack entrance exams for Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), National Law Schools (NLS) and other reputed institutions.

For this purpose, the department is thinking of providing effective coaching for students from first year PUC itself. “Considering the fact that the number of government college students getting into IIT-like institutes is very less, we are thinking of providing special coaching,” said a senior official.
As a first step, the department is collecting data about the number of government college students who have attempted such entrance exams this year and how many among them qualified.

After collecting the data, the department will study the reasons for the students not cracking the entrance exams and prepare a teaching plan accordingly. “Satellite-based training won’t be much useful at rural areas at it will be difficult to implement. So, we are planning
something different. The plan will be finalised in a couple of weeks,” an official said.
According to department officials who have worked at rural colleges, many rural students have no knowledge about the courses or entrance exams they can opt for after II  PUC.

“Students in remote areas know only about medical, dental, engineering and general degree courses. There is a need to arrange orientation programmes for PUC students in this regard,” an official said.
Every year over 6 lakh students appear for second PUC exams. Of them at least 3 lakh are from government colleges.
