BENGALURU: When you pass by this commercial complex in Kurubarahalli, you wouldn’t expect a school to be functioning there. And this school boasts of just one room —  a 10X10 sqft rented space — and with just 5 students! When the state education department is shutting down government-run schools and colleges with less than 10 students, the Department of Public Instruction has allegedly given permission to this private school located in the commercial complex.

Now, a complaint has reached the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights where the residents of the area questioned how the education department could give permission to run a school in such a tiny space. The complainants even attached a photograph of the school. However, now based on the complaint, the Commission has decided to write to the  education department. The complaint mentions that the name of the school is ‘St Joseph School’ and recognised by government of Karnataka.

Speaking to Express, a senior official of the Commission said, “As the education department has given permission to the school as per the complaint, we will issue notice to the department and ask for a report.”
According to the complaint, only 5 students were admitted in the school during the 2016-17 academic year. Interestingly, all were allegedly admitted under Right to Education  quota.
When contacted, a senior official of the Education department said, “There are thousands of schools in the city. We will verify once we get a copy of the complaint from the Commission.”
