BENGALURU: A medieval art learnt in the which was practiced by Italian artisans to depict biblical scenes will be taught in the city. Called decoupage, it is is an art of decorating objects with paper cut-outs and tissue papers. The word is derived from a French word ‘decouper’ which means “to cut out”.
“It’s is a great way of up-cycling and making a contribution towards the environment. Any surface like wood, glass, fabric, tin can be decoupaged and turned into a beautiful piece of art,” says Nargis Khan, a decouper who has been conducting decoupage workshops for kids and adults at her place for a year now. She will conduct her first workshop - The Mixed Media Bottle Art, in a public setting at Dialogue’s Cafe Koramangala on November 26. Nargis is an artist by passion and an engineer by profession.

She highlights that decoupage can be created using household materials like newspapers, magazines, catalogues, books, printed clip art, tissue paper, lace and much more. “Furniture, photograph albums, plates, ceramics, shelving, frames, mirrors are something to decoupage on. I recently tried fabric decoupage and it came out beautifully. I have many decoupage projects in queue. One is on a glass furniture at home, a mirror work at friend’s place and another is on a dedicated board for my niece’s room and many more,” says Nargis.

The workshop is all about creating handcrafted art projects using different medias like paints, fabrics, texture paste and much more. Bottle art will introduce beginners to simple and an |
interesting ways to up-cycle a glass bottle or jar into an art piece. Beginners should have patience and an eye for art. The overall session will be fun learning, exciting and rejuvenating, adds Nargis.
She has received good response from her customers and students and has recently started her own YouTube channel.

“The learning never ends in decoupage, To attain expertise one should keep practising and if you are passionate about something you will find the time and can feel the pleasure of indulging in creativity,” she adds.
