BENGALURU: OVER 8,500 students of various post-graduate courses at Bangalore University’s Jnana Bharathi campus will be offered health insurance benefits in near future. In the latest syndicate meeting, the university officials decided to introduce a health insurance for all students. A syndicate sub-committee was also constituted to look into the modalities.

“Majority of students in our campus are from financially weaker sections of the society. In case of any serious health issues, most families fail to bear the expenses. A health insurance will be of immense help to them,” said a senior official of Bangalore University. The university is yet to decide on the scheme and investment methods. BU officials, however, confirmed that students will also have to pay a small portion of the premium amount.

“We wanted to extend the facility to students of all affiliated colleges, but there is dearth of funds to implement the same. Providing the health insurance benefits to 8,500 students at the campus is our first  priority,” said an official.

Students have welcomed the move. “Such students-friendly measures help us. However, authorities must discuss the same with students before implementing the scheme. Also, students should not be made to pay much,” said Krithika, a PG student residing at the university hostel.
