BENGALURU: It’s just a few more months for the current academic year to end, but children studying in Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) schools are still waiting to get their uniforms, shoes and even books.

This came to light when the BBMP Standing Committee (Education) inspected some of the schools on Monday. After making her maiden inspection, Committee Chairperson Gangamma Rajanna said, “When we visited a school in Frazer Town, we saw that the children are yet to get books, uniforms and shoes. It is almost December. If they do not get books or shoes, how can children study?” Gangamma then directed the commissioner to blacklist the contractor and asked the official concerned to provide the children with books and other amenities.

About the teachers in BBMP schools, Gangamma said their situation is worse than that of pourakarmikas. “At least pourakarmikas get a monthly salary of `14,000 per month, but some teachers are getting only `8,000 per month. How can one expect to live in a city like Bengaluru with this salary?” she asked. Gangamma added teachers also work from 9.30am to 5pm.Adding to the problems at BBMP schools are frequent power outages.
