BENGALURU: Three-year-old Sanjana lies on her aunt Asha’s lap on Tuesday evening still in trauma. The memories of the building collapse still haunt her. She is being treated at Victoria Hospital’s Mahabodhi Burns Centre where doctors say she has a long recovery ahead of her. “She gets startled at night while sleeping,” James Karthik, a family friend says. She is being looked after by Asha and Karthik as the rest of the family is busy with the last rites of Sanjana’s parents. She is sadly oblivious to all this.

Karthik told Express: “I have seen Sanjana from the day she was born and have been visiting her since. The doctors have told us they can’t say anything conclusive for the next 48 hours. Asha and I are taking turns to look after her and in between participating in the last rites too.” Some others who have known the child for sometime described how Sanjana was a cheerful kid.

Bhavya Y, a neighbour, said, “The girl is very talkative. She would play with us when we stand in a queue to fill water. Her father used to drop her at the anganwadi in the morning at around 10 and her mother would pick her up from the school.” Deepa, another neighbour said, “She goes to the Viveknagar anganwadi opposite Shanthiniketan school.

She’s cheerful and was friendly with everyone.” Back at Victoria, a volunteer with NGO Vimochana who is working with burns patients at the hospital, said, “Sanjana has had a lot of visitors. A person from K J George’s office was also sent to check on her. Karthik has been running around for everything from diapers to bedspreads. Asha has been quiet though, still shellshocked from having lost her pregnant sister. This is a very tough time for the family and they are doing the best they can for Sanjana.”
