Police said that Mahalinga, 32, was on night duty on Saturday. He, along with another policeman, was checking vehicles that were heading from Bengaluru towards Mysuru. Around 10.20 pm, Mahalinga had stopped a car for checking. As nothing was found, he asked the car to leave and moved towards the roadside without noticing a speeding goods auto approaching in his direction.

“The auto was too close and even the driver could not control the vehicle. The vehicle knocked him down and Mahalinga sustained multiple injuries. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital and was admitted. But he succumbed to injuries within a few minutes,” the police added.
