Scratch barcode, pay Rs 1,500 fine, VTU students told

For students of Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi, here’s some bad news.

BENGALURU: For students of Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi, here’s some bad news. If you have scratched the barcode on your answer script or written the wrong registration number on it, then get ready to pay a penalty. Following the increasing number of such cases, the university has decided to collect penalty of `1,500 from such students.

All these years, the university used to ignore this and gather information about the students from concerned colleges to evaluate the answer scripts later. As the number of such cases increased during the recent results announced for first, third and fifth semesters, the university decided to bring in discipline by charging a penalty.

According to the sources from the university, on Friday, over 600 such students from different colleges affiliated to VTU were called to Belagavi (head office). Officials explained them about the problem they face when there’s no proper registration number and bar code. “Looks like it’s a habit of some students, so we decided to explain them the problem. Now, we have decided to penalise them with `1,500. We ignored it all these  years, but this time the number is high and we are forced to initiate such an action,” said Prof Jagannath Reddy, registrar administration of VTU.

When students scratch the bar code and write wrong  registration number on the answer script, the university will not be able to  process that particular answer script for evaluation. Without a bar code, the answer script cannot be scanned.

“For such students, we have to withhold the results and announce it later because it takes more time to identify the students’ registration number. Even this year we have withheld results of some students and the evaluation will be done after getting proper details from colleges,” explained the Registrar.

For the first time

Earlier, when the results were withheld by VTU,students thought it was due to a technical glitch. But this time when some students approached the university asking why their results were withheld, the university had a different reason. The authorities told them it is because the bar code or the registration number wasn’t visible on the answer script and it will be corrected once they pay the penalty.
