Bangalore has over 2000 licensed meat shops

Prasad stated that 2,649 shops in the city include 505 mutton shops, 358 beef shops, 1,242 chicken stalls, 58 pork chops, 227 fish stalls, one egg shop, 175 cold storage, 83 multi-trade shops.

BENGALURU: BBMP Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad on Monday informed the Karnataka High Court that there are a total of 2,649 licensed meat and other related shops in the city.

It was stated in an affidavit filed by Prasad before the court in relation to the contempt petition filed by Gau Gyan Foundation stating that the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Preservation Act, 1964, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and the Transport of Animals Rules, 1978, were not being enforced strictly despite the court orders.

Prasad stated that 2,649 shops in the city include 505 mutton shops, 358 beef shops, 1,242 chicken stalls, 58 pork chops, 227 fish stalls, one egg shop, 175 cold storage, 83 multi-trade shops. The Commissioner has also stated that a modern abattoir at Harohalli Industrial Area, near Kanakapura is under construction.
