BENGALURU: BBMP on Tuesday informed the Karnataka High Court that it is fully equipped to ensure there would be no flooding in the city during monsoon.
V Sreenidhi, counsel of BBMP, made this statement in the status report filed before a division bench of Chief Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice Krishna S Dixit with regard to remodelling, construction, maintenance and desilting of stormwater drains carried out in the city.
The status report was submitted in response to the court's order issued while hearing a PIL filed by Citizen Action Group seeking directions for removal of SWD encroachment.
Samarpana, an NGO, has also filed an impleading application to the PIL.
According to the status report, as of today, total 192.35 km of remodelling and construction of SWDs have been completed. The BBMP is taking up further 20 km of remodelling, construction and desilting work of SWDs in Yeshwanthpur and it would be completed within 60 days from Tuesday.
It was further submitted that to prevent garbage from being thrown into SWDs, BBMP had undertaken to lay chain-link fencing along the SWDs.
BBMP had identified 16 additional vulnerable reaches and fenced the same with chain-link fences. In total, 179.85 km of drains is now fenced. BBMP also informed that in the past, during rains, the water flow into the SWDs had been smooth without any obstruction or flooding.
BBMP was making all efforts in carrying out the work of desilting and maintenance as diligently as possible, the BBMP said.
63 CONTROL ROOMS
Throughout monsoon, 63 control rooms have been set up, headed by Joint Commissioners across zones. These control rooms are working round the clock to make sure there is no flooding in the city.
