BENGALURU: Taking the state government to task for delays in cleaning the highly polluted Bellandur lake, the Karnataka High Court on Thursday wondered why the ‘big government’ could not do this small job for three years. While directing that ‘a responsible officer’ of the government should be present before the court on Friday, the division bench of Justice H G Ramesh and Justice Mohammad Nawaz said the government had no anxiety about the matter.

While hearing a public interest litigation filed by Rajya Sabha Member D Kupendra Reddy in 2015, seeking directions to clean the tank, the court observed that even three years after the petition was filed, the government could not clean the tank. “What were they doing?

A responsible officer who can coordinate with all the departments concerned should be present on Friday,” the court said. During the last hearing, the state government had informed the court that it had passed an order to shift 60 out of 74 industries in Bellandur catchment area.
