Bengaluru: Colombians held for robbing ex-IAS officer

Duo who burgled his house said to be part of larger gang; caught while trying to burgle another house

BENGALURU: The Jayanagar police have cracked the case pertaining to burglary at former Chief Secretary Kaushik Mukherjee’s house in Sector 6, HSR Layout on June 16, in which gold ornaments and goods worth `25 lakh were found stolen. Two Colombian nationals were arrested on Friday in Jayanagar when they came to a residence to commit burglary. Their suspicious actions were caught live on a CCTV camera at the entrance of the building and residents immediately informed the police who rushed to the spot and nabbed them.

Upon interrogation, the Colombian duo, who mainly spoke Spanish, spilled the beans about the June 16 burglary at Mukherjee’s residence. The police said the duo posed as salesmen to scout areas and then target vacant residences. During interrogation, the accused confessed that they committed burglary in HSR Layout and revealed the date. It was while checking the date, that the police realised that on June 16 the retired IAS officer’s residence had been burgled.

They were carrying walkie-talkies while committing burglary in Mukherjee’s residence, which was targeted late in the evening on that day when Mukherjee and his wife were out visiting a friend’s house before going to a mall for shopping. Around 11 pm, when the couple returned home, they were shocked to see their home ransacked and the rear door broken open. The burglars had stolen watches, earrings, six gold bangles and three diamond rings.

With the arrest of the two Colombians, and subsequent interrogation, the police have found out that they were a part of a gang. Although the precise size of the gang is not known yet, the police believe that it is a seven-member gang. Also the exact modus operandi of the accused is yet to be ascertained. A special team has been formed to nab the other accused of the gang. A police officer said, “I do not want to reveal the identity of the accused as investigation has just begun. We are gathering more details of the gang as part of the investigation. We shall share all the details once other suspects will be nabbed.”
