Bengaluru civic body slaps Rs 14 Lakh penalty on commercial buildings for releasing sewage water

BBMP Joint Commissioner said they had recently found around eight of these buildings, housing commercial properties, letting sewage water flow freely from their building premises on to Church street.

BENGALURU: Cracking down on commercial buildings which were responsible for letting out sewage water on Church Street and damaging the road, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Saturday said they had levied penalties totalling Rs 14 lakh on those establishments.

Speaking to The New Indian Express, BBMP Joint Commissioner (East) said they had recently found around eight of these buildings, housing commercial properties, letting sewage water flow freely from their building premises on to Church street. This had led to severe waterlogging on the roads.

“We have levied fines on these buildings,” the official said.

Renovation work on Church Street was completed in March this year, at a cost of `9 crore. Upgrades included a cobble-stoned carriageway and footpaths.

On October 3, BBMP officials had conducted an inspection and cleaning drive on Church Street in which they discovered that these buildings, lacking proper drainage and rainwater harvesting systems, were letting the sewage flow on the street.
