BENGALURU: The city will get some respite from the mounting piles of garbage, which have accumulated during the festival season, by Sunday evening, Mayor Gangambike Mallikarjun said on Saturday.

Over the last few days, several areas across the city, including Gandhi Bazaar, Malleswaram, Banashankari and KR Market have witnessed huge mounds of wet waste left to rot on the streets. The amount of garbage generated increased after Ayudha Puja and Vijayadashmi.Vendors, who sold puja material such as flowers and plantain leaves, also dumped their unsold stock on the streets after Friday.

Taking this into account, Gangambike met officials on Saturday and asked them to clear the garbage immediately. The officials assured to send photos of clean roads to the Mayor by Sunday evening. In many places, garbage lorries did not pick up waste on Friday and this added to the problem.

“We need two days to complete this work. It will be done by Sunday,” Gangambike added.
