2008 Bengaluru serial blasts: Nabbed terror suspect admits to planting explosives

BENGALURU: Saleem, the terror suspect arrested by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) in connection with the Bengaluru serial bomb blasts in 2008, has reportedly admitted that he was the one who planted explosives. Besides, he has also confessed to have taken part in an unsolved supari killing case and other robbery cases.

Saleem, who hails from Parambaya village in Kannur of Kerala district, was arrested by the CCB from Kannur on October 10. Sources in the CCB said he was taken to Madikeri and Kerala as part of the probe.
“During questioning, he admitted that he had played an active role in carrying out serial bomb blasts in Bengaluru and had taken part in conspiracy meetings. Besides, he had come to the city along with other accused persons and had planted nine explosives in the early hours of July 25, 2008 in various parts of the city,” a senior police officer said.

The bombs had exploded in the afternoon of July 25, killing one Sudha at Madiwala bus stop and injuring several others.

“As many as 20 persons, including PDP Chairman Abdul Nasser Madani, were arrested earlier in the case. But Saleem had managed to evade arrest. He has now admitted to the role he had played in the case and has been remanded to judicial custody. An additional chargesheet will be submitted against him to the court,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Alok Kumar.

Confesses to his role in other crimes

During the course of investigation, Saleem has confessed to a contract killing. “In 2012, a youth named Nishad had gone missing from Kerala and his family members had filed a missing case. He was not found till now. During the interrogation about his involvement in other cases, Saleem admitted that he along with Parambaya Majeed and others had received supari of Rs 25 lakh and had murdered Nishad over an issue related to a girl. His body is yet to be found and Kerala police have been informed about the same. Besides, he had also committed a robbery at Parambaya in 2016,” said a police official.
