Research body builds data analytics tool with Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation

The data tells us earnings per km, travel duration as per the time of the day, timeliness analysis, occupancy ration between stops, on a route level, depot level and across the network.

BENGALURU: The World Resources Institute, a research organisation, in collaboration with the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is developing a data analytics tool to aggregate data from electronic ticketing machines (ETMs) and vehicle tracking units (VTU).

At a ‘Bus Karo’ workshop -- Data for City Transport -- Jonathan D’Cruz from WRI said, “Insights derived from the tool include boarding and alighting patterns. For example, from Majestic to Electronic city, there are thousands of passengers on weekdays, but this number reduces on weekends. This means BMTC does not have to run the same schedule throughout the week.”

“While there are three major bus stands -- Majestic (Kempegowda Bus Stand), KR Market and Shivajinagar, a lot of smaller hubs pop-up as the city grows. For example, Kengeri on the outskirts. More BMTC resources can be allocated to the smaller hubs, once they identify it using this tool.

The data tells us earnings per km, travel duration as per the time of the day, timeliness analysis, occupancy ration between stops, on a route level, depot level and across the network. We can also break it down to an hourly, daily, monthly and yearly basis,” he said, adding that historic data is now available even on driver performance, trip completion rate, if stops are skipped, etc.
